  • Handmade doll: Mom

    ClotNot Club

    Mom↗

    Angie G.

I am a mom. I made the doll to be fun, like me - wild, curly hair, colorful clothes, and funky jewelry. But it wasn't always like that. I remember times when it seemed there was no color or fun left in the world, as if my eyes had been blinded to the wonder of life. Replaced, instead, with blue and gray hues of sadness and sorrow and red slashes of anger. Then, I found something within myself. I found strength. I found character. I found purpose. I have a wonderful son, who is growing each day into a most incredible young man, and I am a part of that. My doll, therefore, represents the color and fun that has been returned to my life - the wonder of my son. Thanks so much for including moms in this project!! What an amazing opportunity for women to share their common experience with other women. MOM I am MOM. I cry real tears. I gave this to my son. He was just 4 days old when he nearly died because of what I gave him. It wasn’t my fault. I didn’t know I was a carrier. I am MOM. I watch in amazement as he grows each day. I stand back as he learns to care for himself. He is resilient. I am thankful he is otherwise healthy and has no complications. But I worry. Each and every day. That the blood product we put into his arm each month isn’t the treatment that takes him from me. I cry real tears. I am MOM Angie is a Caucasian woman who lives in Spring Arbor, Michigan.

Do you know what it’s like to pass clots the size of tennis balls with your menstrual period? Do you know how very tired you feel when your period lasts 30 days?Do you know what it’s like to be given a diagnosis for which there was not a brochure or pamphlet….absolutely no educational materials whatsoever? Do you know how scary it is to only be told “this is what you have” and “if something happens, a hematologist will know what to do”? Do you know how frustrating and frightening it is to be told “women don’t bleed”? Do you know how terrifying a place the world seems when no one believes or understands your medical diagnosis? Do you know how depressing all of this can be?* vWD stands for von Willebrand’s Disease. This is a bleeding disorder that is passed equally among men and women. "Women with HIV are burdened vessels who are courageous, powerful, strong, empathetic, and protectors of our families, but most importantly, women with HIV are worthy. I often think back to a day in the summer of 2001, 5 years after my diagnosis, when I watched the tall ships pass down the Detroit River. I think about what I have lost since and also what I have gained from my journey. I ponder the skills, craftsmanship, teamwork, endurance and courage required to build and sail those vessels in sometimes perilous seas. I am one of those tall ships; tenderly refit by the 'conquering heroes, the leaders and the best' at the University of Michigan who helped me to understand and appreciate that strength has a million faces, and one of them just might be mine." Faith↗

    LTM

Faith is the name I have given this doll because to live Life on a daily basis with this disease, you have to have faith in all sorts of things – Your own strength, wisdom, courage, integrity and sanity. I have lived with HIV for ten years now, and although I am grateful that there are more treatment options, it isn’t a picnic to take all this stuff. These drugs act very differently on women than they do on men, but few studies have been conducted to date to deal with those issues – and like so many other areas of women’s’ healthcare, may never be studied the way it needs to be. As a woman in this epidemic, we are seen as “vectors of disease” – don’t you dare think of becoming a mother, because you might infect that baby; don’t you dare think of becoming someone’s lover, because you might infect that poor man – these are the messages that get drilled in – internally as well as externally. You may ask why is Faith smiling? You live the life you choose – and you can either let all this bullshit get you down or you can wake up each morning, put your best foot forward and hope for love, peace and tranquillity to enter your day. And a HUGE sense of humor doesn’t hurt either… LTM is a consultant for the State Health Dept. in Michigan, as well as an activist, widow, and a champion of cause that deal with fairness for all persons, regardless of race, gender, or sexual orientation

I have learned that Life has lessons to be learned, but if you have not learned from them then Life can pass you by. I have put trust in God that a cure will be found for HIV/AIDS. I also feel that God has some more tasks and challenges he wants me to face before he calls me home. When he does call me home and ask what I have done with my life... I can respond with great joy and gladness that I lived my Life to it's fullest. That's the advice I give to my friends and family - Live Life to it's fullest! Detroit, MI

I believe that we need to be a more compassionate and understand world. We need to educate ourselves more about HIV/AIDS. Through education we would learn that all people with HIV/AIDS need our love and support. We still have 40,000 people in America becoming infected with HIV each year. That is 40,000 too many! This is now a preventable disease so we should only have a handful of new cases each year. It is a human tragedy that we need to end. Through all the pain and suffering that HIV/AIDS brings, I still believe that we all need to have a smile and believe that God will bring us the hope that we need. Rural, MI

Hello, I am a daughter, a sister, a wife and a mom. And I am HIV positive. I have been for at least 14 years now. In 1983 I met the man of my dreams, my first love. He told me he was a hemophiliac. I didn't know what that was nor did I care. I just knew that whenever he got hurt real bad we would go to the hospital where they gave him stuff called Factor VIII because his blood would not clot. We did not know that the stuff that was saving his life was going to take his life and mine - in time. We married in 1985 and had a son who is healthy. His father and I divorced but remained good friends. I met my current husband in 1987 and we married in 1992. Then in 1997 I found out that I was pregnant. We had used protection but it was not foolproof. I finally went to a doctor about my HIV status and my pregnancy. He checked my blood. My viral load was 30,000 and my T cell count was 642. I was lucky because I never had taken any medicines. I also never wanted to know my status in this disease. I was then put on AZT during my pregnancy. Ultimately I had my son and he was a healthy baby boy. I am now on the "great" cocktail. My viral load is non detectable. My T cell count is up and down. I can't lead a normal life because of the side effects: headaches, diarrhea, and numbness in my feet. It's like living with the stomach flu every day of your life. Only my family knows I am HIV positive. I have seen how people treated my ex-husband and I can't take that. We lost him, my oldest son's father, earlier this year. He will always be in my heart. I can never tell my son that I am HIV positive. A 13 year old boy can only handle so much. Well, this is my story. Always remember to hug the ones you love. You never know when your last chance will be.

But just when I thought I was soaring high like a bolt of lightning, I was hit with the news that I was HIV positive. I found that this was the hardest blow. Thinking that I would not rise this time. This attack came from the man I loved, my husband. But through the grace of my god, Jehovah, husband, daughter, and friendship of women who I met through the positive support group such as the one at Wellness, I have risen again. L.M.D.

Lucky I lived for everyone I love. When I was diagnosed clinically with AIDS, I was angry at God and blamed him for my misfortunes. I had the power to make the correct choices, but I didn't. People have disclosed my status without my permission devastated me and hurt me to my heart, but I will survive. I'm as strong as a soldier. I m the Soldier of Life: Lucky I lived For Everyone I love. I finally seen the light, and people at Wellness AIDS Services, Inc. of Flint, MI came to my home, "kidnapped" me, and told me I was going to the women's support group. I met a lot of beautiful women who had ambition and are doing great things with their lives. I realized that everyone and everything has a purpose. Wellness gave me my life back. The women in women's group have built each other's self-esteem emotionally, and we never judged each other. Men and women at Wellness, especially those who have been diagnosed, need to build each other's self-esteem emotionally for support, and never judge each other. Sometimes the world disappoints me. Society judges what they don't know about. Even though I show happiness and joy on the outside, on the inside I'm suffering. For everyone who has this "stereotypical" virus deserves the military ribbon/metal, the Purple Heart, which is what the military receive when they are injured. Our hearts have been broken and injured, but it takes strong, courageous people to overcome the HIV/AIDS virus. I now have a happier, new life with a significant other. When I was at my lowest he was there for me. He gave me what nobody else did; unconditional love, care, and protection. In closing, I am the first female soldier doll in the STITCHES program. I'm honored to feel that everyone living with HIV/AIDS are all Soldiers of Life. You are a great bunch of people.

After being diagnosed 3 years ago, HIV positive. I needed help coping with my family. I was afraid, angry, lonely, and depressed. I joined a women’s support group through Wellness AIDS Services, Inc. in Flint, Michigan. Feeling as though you are the only one in the world who is going this makes matters worse. So they helped me by putting me in touch with others in my same position and by keeping me up to date on helpful information about our disease. Support groups can offer important help by allowing you to blow off steam in a safe place where others have gone through what you are going through. And accept you without being critical.

  • Handmade doll: Fire

    StitchesMichigan

    Fire↗

    Unknown

Fire represents the flames I've been through in the past eight years. In the year 2000, I became homeless with six children. At the end of the year my youngest was born. I then began working at Meijer. Then my ex-husband decided after all these years he wanted custody of my oldest 4 children. This was very traumatic for me. I still remained strong, I felt as if it was mandatory for the sake of my younger 2 children. In 2001, I was living in a hotel with my 2 children, as well as my then boyfriend of 4 years soon after we broke apart. In 2002, I found a new home for my family. Things finally started going great. I met someone new I hadn't been that happy for such a long-time. In 2005, I received a devastating phone call from the nurse at the health department. She requested to have a private meeting with me as soon as possible. I soon found out that I was positive. In the beginning, I had so many mixed feelings. Today I view life much differently. I now see each day is a true blessing. I was a single mom just getting back into the dating game. The condom broke and let me inform you this is no joke. Suddenly my life changed right before the blink of my eye. So if you think because you don't live the wildlife, or a gay lover that this can't happen to you please think again. You have destroyed my dreams of becoming a medical technologist. Even dreams of becoming a mother, a maternal grandmother, and see my heritage expanding from one generation to another. You made me regret being a phlebotomist because then I wouldn't have you In my body destroying my Immune defense system. I now live in the shadow of anxiety and regret. I can only find comfort and hope,Hope for a cure. And I hope that I am on a journey and when my destination arrives God will call my name and I will be waiting so patiently. For I will be going to a better place a place for eternity Where there will be no more suffering but happiness and joy forever. In the meantime I hope for a cure. "Fancy"↗

    Unknown

My name is "Fancy". At least that is the way I used to feel when I was getting ready for a night out on the town with my friends. Now, since this miserable damn virus has invaded my space/body, feeling and looking "fancy" is the least of my concerns. All I feel now is old, used up, useless and ugly. No matter how anyone tries to cheer me up, it doesn't help. No matter what medications I take to so-called help me with my depression, they don't help. And on top of all this, my poor little baby girl died 2 years ago. She was only 3 years old. Why do these horrible things have to happen? I guess God only knows. That's why I pray to him every day to please help me feel "fancy" again. New York City

    Dusty’s Mom↗

    B. Sullivan

Dusty Roy Gaytsoll – 11/13/68 – 6/25/02 Question: If I had it to do over again, what would I do differently? First of all, I was not infected with HIV/AIDS. I was affected. My son had AIDS. At first I was mortified, flabbergasted and all the strong verbs you could think of. Then I cried, prayed, asked God for guidance and understanding, and “He” gave it to me. “He” gave me a route that changed me forever. I lost a 12 year relationship with a man that told me my son could not come home and I could not take care of him, or he was gone. So be it. I moved to the next phase, my son. This young man was ill and needed me, and as I come to find out, so did some others. But he was my son, a child cut from my body. So we settled down for 10 years of groups, doctor visits, medicine changes, lots of tears, a few words of frustration, several I’m worries, and lots of hugs and kisses. Even evictions from an apartment. Over the years our home housed 5 different AIDS patients; Liz, my son’s girlfriend, Tanya a girl from a wealthy Philipino family where sge didn’t fit with her life style, an illegal from Mexico who needed to stay with us until his counselor could get him into a facility, and 2 other gentlemen who needed to stay until they were placed. I learned love, loving, giving, sympathy, empathy, compassion, humbleness, humility, and much more. I’m not saying it was easy because it wasn’t always. Not was it always lots of joy. But we all got through. nd My son died June 25, 2002 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Tucson, Arizona. We went for his 2 chemo treatment. He had lymphoma. It spread through his body 27 days after he was diagnosed. So, what would I do different if I had it to do over again? Nothing! I would go through it pretty much the same way. Oh maybe, a few little changes like knowing what to expect. But all in all I’d do it again. I’m 63, a retired Social Worker just doing what I want to. Caucasian ,Casa Grande, Arizona. ID: ST-MIZ

    Silent With Hope↗

    Delores Quesada

Silent was not allowed to be part of society, not speak or be spoken to. As she grew, unaware of events in society, she hadn’t a care of them. She looked and listened without seeing or hearing, didn’t feel or think. She was just there, a part of a world but never belonging. She feared being seen or spoken to. It was too painful, cause it was against all she had learned. Silent believes she finds Hope in becoming a part of society through alcohol and marijuana, later intervenous drug use. She loses her teacher (father), becomes alone but her society takes her to a new world behind bars, she accepted it because the drugs still lived within these walls. She shared needle, still unaware of an outcome unknowing of HIV. One day the doctor tells Silent she is HIV positive. Silent asked the doctor, “So I’ll have to take medicine a week or so?” Doctor informs Silent of HIV. Silent is scare and loses Hope. Silent stops drugs, but continues alcohol, more and more to forget living a life of death. Organizations – Native American – seek her out, looking for Silent on the streets, on the railroad tracks, at her jobs. Silent wonders why they want me. Silent is already dead without Hope. She seeks them out because the wondering of why pulls her to that direction. She learns she is not alone and that there is Hope. Silent finds a new world, new Hope, and a new Life. She learns to look, listen, and hear. She instills in her life not to be seen or heard, this is why Silent hasn’t a mouth. Regrets, many, but Hope lifts Silent through it all. So Silent is no longer alone. She has two families, two worlds. Full of support and love that instill love, faith, and hope in overcoming all. Silent knows one day a cure will be found. But Death alone has no hold on her, through Christ her Lord, who truly lifts her to her real Father. Native-American , Arizona ID: ST-MIZ

I’m Kennedy. I am an artist and hippy. I grew up in the seventies and I really never have conformed to this day and age. Some can say I’m Old School too. I love to sing at home and in the shower and especially in my car! My daughter who is twelve, thinks I can not dance but says I’m still a cool parent. She is my heart. Without her or my older son I don’t know how I could have survived my diagnosis of AIDS, which was November of 2004. I now am healthy and undetectable. Life just keeps getting better and better by choices I make and the positive changes I am making in my life. Two weeks ago I became a grandma. Two years ago I never thought I’d live to see this day. It was such a joyous and perfect day. I need to know that I am making a positive change in someone else’s life also, I do this when I am out doing what I love doing best. And that is educating my peers about the importance of taking an active part in our own Recovery. This is the rest of our life we are talking about…I can still be creative. I remember being very sick mentally, physically, and emotionally behind the abuse. Today I am a new woman with goals and dreams. I no longer accept abuse in my life. I know I am worthy of love, respect, and support. I now choose to have people around me that will bring these qualities into my life. I now live in Phoenix, Arizona and have remarried. My spouse, who is not infected, is a man who is kind, loving, and understanding. I have never known these attributes bit I know I am worthy of them. I also chose a career to help women, like myself, so they can make better choices in their lives. It’s important to let them know that they still have a life…even after HIV. Remind yourself of the things you are grateful for like life itself, your health, family, friends, career. A is for accomplishments. This is written for all the women of the world that have found themselves in situations, conditions, or even misconceptions of who we really are. Lots of care is being taken to use the dolls in various settings to help each of us understand, rationalize, and adjust to old wounds in our lives, that keep us from being the woman that we were meant to be. I’m dying, I’m dying, I’m dying Is there anyone crying? Who gives a care, is anybody there? Dying from trying… Trying to fight… Trying to hang in there Trying to make it to tomorrow, only sorrow from trying and I’m still dying Dying from poor education, dying from neglect Dying from lack of touch, lack of sensation Dying from no one caring, caring, caring… Caring for what, for whom? Caring about when, caring for what Caring, well! Sure I’m caring… I care for football, basketball Who won the Olympics, the Fiesta Bowl, the World Series, also the Super Bowl You said caring… Is this not enough caring… What sitcom will win the prize for the best of the year? What actor will win the Grammy? Just who will take home the Oscar? Who’s the “best” dressed celebrity? Whose recording is the best? Who married whom? I care about who cheated on whom, Who got caught, who got away… What’s the latest gossip in town? Who died? Who will be immortalized? Will we go to war? What’s the highest priced car? What’s the color for this year? What and where are the best land & homes to buy? Tell me again that I don’t care… You see I care about the things that matter to me, So, if you’re dying, I will not be the one crying So keep on dying, I‘ll keep caring about only the things that matter to me… No caring for humanity No crying for the motherless child No caring for the old man that lives under the bridge… No crying for the woman who lost her only child to war So go on trying, crying, or even dying because I won’t be here. Don’t give up, because Jesus cares for you. I heard someone say something and I knew it wasn't right because it was very ungodly. Full of anger and dislike, but it was really shocking to look in the mirror and see that the foul mouth person was staring at me. I saw a man today whose walk was way off track because he choose the darkness instead of following the light, but when I turned around I found there was no one else. So it made me realize I was looking at myself. While standing on the riverbank my mind was in a daze. So I threw a rock in the water because I wanted to see some waves. I glanced at my reflection as the waves rolled by and it was there, that I noticed my problems started, with me, myself, and I. Ft Lauderdale, FL

    Asha

I was very greedy from my childhood days. I always envied my friends who were rich. I liked to have good clothes, cell phone, rich boyfriend with a car, etc. Everyone cautioned me about my greediness but I did not listen to anybody. On the contrary, I was looking for an opportunity to run away from home to a big city and become a movie star. When I was in grade 9, I saw an advertisement in a newspaper for an audition. I had stolen money from my dad’s wallet and a gold chain of my mom’s and took the first train to that city. I met a lady on the train and became friends: she shared her food with me. When I woke up I saw myself in a dimly lit room, there were some men with cameras and women also. My clothes were torn and I felt terrible pain in my abdomen. I did not know for how long I was with those men as I had no clue where I was. When I became very weak and felt dizzy all the time they brought a doctor who advised them to transfer me to a hospital. There I was told that I was pregnant as well as HIV+. Since I had no place to go they sent me to a shelter home where I have been staying now. I tried to commit suicide by consuming rat poison. I survived but lost my child. Kolkata, India

When I became a mother at the age of 16, I realized there was no food for the child. My husband’s factory was closed and we had no money left. Our dependent in-laws and the Two of us survived on charity food three times a week. But the baby had to starve most of the time as I did not have any breast milk to feed him. Our neighbor used to work in a city, she convinced my husband to allow me to go with her and she would fix a job for me. Every month I would send the money and after a year I would come back. Since there was no other option so I went with her and she took me to a big city and sold me to a brothel owner. When I realized it was too late. I tried to resist in vain. There I had to entertain 3 to 4 men every night and that was how I got infected with this disease. Once there was a police raid and they sent me to Kolkata because I am a Bengali. I do not know whether I will be able to see my child at all before I die. Kolkata, India

    Champa

When my father left my mother, she was 30 years old with 4 kids. Being the eldest one, I understood how difficult it was to arrange food, clothing and school fees for all of us I had to drop out from school and started working as a maid to an elderly lady in a nearby house. They used to have a lot of guests. Most to them were good barring one uncle who used to give me chocolates but I did not like his eyes. Once all the family members went to a wedding and no one was there except the old grandma and I when that uncle dropped by. That night he abused me more than once and next month I missed my period. No one believed me, they all blamed me and my mother was helpless. She went to a social worker in our area and that lady arranged for a shelter home for me. I was only 15 years old any my body was not ready for a baby and I had a miscarriage. I bled like anything when the doctors advised for a blood transfusion. One of the bottles was contaminated with HIV and that was how I got it. Now I am 20 years old and I am not scared of dying because I think I died twice before, once when I was abused and then when I was diagnosed. But at times I feel lonely, alone and away from my mother and my family. What was my fault? Kolkata, India

I heard the story of A Paper Bag Princess, from a caregiver. It was the same story of my life, only difference was the princess of the story was so strong and empowered that she had the guts to reject the prince and started her life afresh. But here I the foolish girl was abandoned by my prince after he gifted me this incurable disease. The person with whom I left my home, parents and leaving behind a very comfortable life turned out to be an imposter, I trusted him blindly when he promised to marry me but instead he used to bring his friends along and forced me to serve alcohol and to dance in front of them. I had to please those men almost every night. I felt so naked even with clothes on! One day I felt sick and no one was around so I cried out for help and fortunately a police car was passing, they rescued me and sent me to a hospital and there I was diagnosed. I did not have any idea what was the meaning of HIV+ but this much I knew that I am going to die soon. I pray to God to grant me enough time and strength so that I can unmask that man before I die. This doll represents an outreach effort in an orphanage in Cape Town, South Africa. In July of 2006, a University of Michigan student agreed to take some doll forms to South Africa where she was going to study for 5 months. When unforeseen difficulties scuttled the original plan for the dolls, Lindsay came up with another one. These are her words "In September I went to the orphanage bearing gifts of dolls and valuable information. By using colorful posters as visual aids, I explained to the girls about HIV/AIDS. Being that the girls were between the ages of 3 to 13 and had very short attention spans, I kept my presentation brief. Then it was time for the fun to begin. I told them about the STITCHES campaign and said that they could decorate the dolls to remind them to be safe and careful in the future. The rest of the evening flew by in a fury of feathers, glue, and beads.Sure, some of the dolls met an unceremonious end; being covered in glue and abandoned by the former artists. However, most of the girls had a wonderful time. One of the dolls even had a hand-written sign on her back that read I have HIV. Give me hugs, not drugs. Upon leaving the orphanage, I hung the posters on the wall and admired many beautiful dolls. I left that night feeling hopeful. For if just one of those girls remembers some small fact about my presentation or decorating the dolls, then the global conflict that is HIV/AIDS is one step closer to being resolved." This STITCHES artist was a small child in an orphanage in S. Africa, where AIDS is wiping out entire generations of people. Her innocence and her pain has a voice in this doll. Listen, if you dare. Help, if you can.

    Deb Runion↗

AIDS Diagnosis: December 19, 1995 Date of Death: November, 2005 She walks on a path winding and full of changes but wide enough to accommodate friends. The girl has no knowledge of strangers – only magicians. She carries the world in her hand; he holds mysteries in his pocket. Sometimes they journey alone, sometimes together. Her cup of security is priceless – encrusted with the jewels of family, washed in the silver and gold of friends. They are her Holy Grail. The key of wisdom she wears around her neck resting near her heart for it is the Key to Heaven and the kingdom is within. Water of grace, the girl bears it in pots fashioned from the healing clay of mercy; she submerges herself in the black depths of mystery and walks on that ocean’s bottom, maintaining her life by breathing the air of forgiveness innate to the Creator’s womb. She meets the bear of romance with respect. Pulling berries from her pocket, she offers a gift. Standing bear sings her the song of power and they part. The Cobra lays coiled in the center of her path. She kneels humbly before it, honouring the mystery and power it possesses. The serpent strikes her heart, but only lightly grazes her skin as though anointing her with a kiss. The wall of death is high and deep, but transparent. She sees into the world beyond and is not afraid. Laughing, she drops the cloth of flesh and dons the feather fabric preferred by Spirit. Without restriction her soul flies. Deb Runions is a Tennessean, a Democrat, a student of theosophy, a writer, a teacher, and an AIDS activist. She is also a daughter, sister, widow, mother and grandmother. Her message is this: AIDS is here to heal-not just those of us who have the infection but American society as a whole.

First and foremost, I thank HIV for teaching me strength and resilience. I have learned along the way that you have to be true to yourself and never let a moment go by that you have not seized. A am an achiever, a nurturer, a mother, a sister, a daughter, and educator and a scholar. I am alive and celebrate the fact that God has blessed me with my children. This was the signal that let me know that HIV was a “life” sentence not a “death” sentence. Make the most of your life and let your legacy be something you can be proud of. I have a sign in my classroom that says “Time, the one thing you cannot recycle.” I use this to motivate me and remind myself that I must seize the day, “Carpe Diem,” for it will come no more.
