From your hands to the collection
Make it yours, one step at a time.
You can make a doll at home or take part in a workshop. Start by talking with Kathy about the collection you’d like to join.
Start with a cloth doll
A lightly filled muslin doll gives you a place to begin. Look for one at a craft store, or ask Kathy about getting a doll or a kit and the current cost.
Give her something of yourself
Add fabric, hair, beads, paint, jewelry, or small objects that have meaning to you. There’s no single way your doll needs to look.
Write what she would say
Give your doll a voice in your own words. Your story can be a few lines, a memory, a poem, or a longer reflection.
Send your doll and forms
Kathy will provide the submission forms and mailing instructions. The forms explain the collection’s requirements and give permission for your doll and story to be shared.

A few things to know.
Who can make a doll?
Stitches includes women living with HIV/AIDS, people affected by bleeding disorders, and survivors of violence or discrimination. Each collection has its own submission criteria. Kathy can help you understand which program fits your experience.
For the HIV and ClotNot Club collections, the submission process includes verification of the relevant condition.
Can my story be shared without my name?
Yes. Your doll can be displayed without your name. Information on the demographic form is kept confidential, and the release form explains permission to share your doll and story. Talk with Kathy about what you’re comfortable sharing before submitting.
Do I need sewing experience?
You can start with a ready-made cloth doll and decorate it with fabric, paint, beads, or other embellishments. Your choices and your story give the doll her character.
Where do I get the forms and a doll-making kit?
Email Kathy for the submission forms and current kit options. Kits may also be offered at conferences, community events, and social gatherings. Confirm availability and cost before you begin.
